Expenses
Education
Local 2000 sponsors its own Worksite Leader Training seminars throughout the state and publicizes its various legislative and contract campaigns. Training seminars include such subjects as:

The definition, investigation and processing of grievances.

Discharge and discipline cases and how to handle them appropriately.

Employment discrimination (i.e. what evidence is important where discrimination is claimed based on race, sex, creed, color, national origin, religion and physical handicap.

Unfair promotions, transfers or layoffs.
Per Capita Taxes
International per capita monies support activities originating out of our Washington DC offices. These services are important in coordinating activities from coast to coast. Services that directly and indirectly benefit members include:

Worksite Leader, officer and union representative training conferences
-
Legislative and rule making oversight and action on labor laws, Medicaid and Medicare financing, federal nursing home regulation, progressive tax reform and other workplace related legislation.

Research at the national level done for the local union.

Legal action in defense of work rights at the national level (i.e. before the National Labor Relations Board, Supreme Court, etc.)

Educational publications such as labor history materials, Worksite leader manuals, etc.
State and Local Per Capita Taxes - almost every unit is affiliated with a city or county labor council and Local 2000 is also affiliated with both the Missouri and Illinois AFL-CIO. These councils help coordinate pro-worker activities at the state and local level. They assist in coordinating grass roots campaigns on the type of legislative activity noted above.
Member Voice
This includes salaries and benefits for Local 2000 employees, legal costs, and professional fees. Services provided through these expenses include:

Research, representation, advice and briefs concerning: contract negotiations, grievances, employment discrimination, unfair labor practice charges, workers compensation*, unemployment hearings * (*as time permits)

Legislative activity on: protecting and advancing minimum wages, workers compensation and unemployment benefits, child care and family leave provisions, social security, and protecting and advancing jobs in our industries.

Clerical services including typing contract proposals, correspondence with members and employers, reproducing information for distribution, bookkeeping, etc.
Organizing
It is important that we work to organize new members to strengthen the voices of working people. When negotiating with legislators and employers, there is strength in numbers. The more employees organized, in our industries, the more legislators will make our agenda a priority. Unions play an important role as a check and balance on employer organizations and the wealthy. We can and will continue to make a difference. Services provided include:

Assisting employees in developing effective organizing committees and campaigns.

Meeting with employees individually and in groups explaining the advantages or building a union.

Representation with the National Labor Relations Board in filing for elections, handling procedural requirements and unfair labor practice charges.

Assisting employees in developing and reproducing organizing materials.
Office and Administrative
This budget line covers expenses necessary to providing direct services noted above. Included are phone costs, office rent, auto expenses, meeting room rentals, office equipment, etc.
Member Expenses
This covers reimbursements for lost time due to bargaining, organizing and other authorized lost wages.
Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If we want to make progress, we must be willing to help finance and support the Union actively. Our investment in these efforts today determines our returns in the future.
